James Ward

Dr. James J. Ward is a privacy lawyer and data strategist based at the University of Oxford Internet Institute. His scholarship focuses on the interaction between legal structures, connected technologies, and human Autonomy. He advises clients on AI, data strategy, data protection requirements, including GDPR and CCPA. He helps clients craft innovative solutions to data-based problems, establishes robust privacy programs, formulates AI strategies, and leads teams to create new data products generating millions of dollars in revenue per year He is the chief data strategist and privacy officer for a number of publicly- traded companies–representative clients and partnerships include: FIS Global EY Duff & Phelps Arizent Broadhaven Capital Partners James is the author of “Data Leverage: Unlocking the Surprising Growth Potential of Data Partnerships,” a bestselling book on data partnerships, privacy, and data strategy, was the principal author of the Webby© Award winning “A-Z of AI” with Google, and is frequently interviewed in publications around the world on privacy and AI matters, including the Guardian, the BBC, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and others. He is a member of the European Union’s qualified expert pool on privacy and data. He is also a certified Fellow in Information Privacy, holds certifications in European and United States data security and privacy law (CIPP/E and CIPP/US), and privacy program management (CIPM). Dr. Ward was a seasoned litigator with more than a decade’s experience in high stakes litigation, including intellectual property, financial services, and consumer class actions. Mr. Ward received his PhD from Oxford University, his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School, and a BA from Northwestern University.
